Golf helps build youths self-esteem!
Positive self-esteem is the bedrock of success in life and golf is one of the very best ways a youngster can build it.
Firstly, a youngster will always find an adult willing to help and encourage them even when, as in my case, my parents didn’t play.
Golf helps kids set goals in relation to their score and their handicap, which creates a road map to follow. Most people find their way better with a map.
When grouped with others on a course, golf makes it easy for even the shiest and most awkward child to make friends. And these friends boost one’s sense of self-esteem. To quote Sally Fields from her memorable Oscar acceptance speech twenty years ago, “ You like me, you really like me!”
While no kid likes discipline, the general rules of behavior and dress at a golf club ensure everyone fits in. And the higher standard of behavior and dress at a golf club also enhances children’s self-image.
The golf course is unique in that adults will treat kids as adults when playing golf with them. In fact, as my game improved, many adults sought me out to play with them as they knew I might help their game while we played. Talk about positive self-esteem, grown adults seeking the advice of a 15 year old. Wow!
